This year the senior class did not meet the goal of passing students on the PSSA’s, resulting in no senior trip. The reason for setting the goal was for students to work hard to try to accomplish the trip. For all those students that did work hard and did good on the PSSA’s, Mr. Roland agrees that those students do deserve individual rewards. These awards will not resemble the senior trip because Mr. Roland stated,“We win as a team and we loose as a team.”
Things like senior release are a reward, but they could do better on the individual rewards, and would be open to serious suggestions from the students. The students
that are doing well can only try to lead the example for those students that don’t even care; they could help with tutoring or by encouraging the other students. All that struggling students need to understand a subject better is available to them, whether it is from another student or from a teacher. Unfortunately, for some reason struggling students don’t seem to want to get the help. Some struggling students just keep thinking that they will be out of school soon and grades do not matter.
“I’ve noticed as a school, students are very academically passive, I’ve seen athletes try to be the best at a sport but don’t have the same competitiveness in the classroom. When I was at Franklin Regional students always wanted to be the best, if a students ranking in the class was number 10 then the student would want to be number 9 and would work to be better and when they got to number 9 they would then work to be number 8, but not here. Here if a student were at number 10 then they would say ‘I’m at number 10, I’m good’, there isn’t that same competitiveness in the classroom,” said Mr. Roland.Students need to start working harder at school if they want to get anywhere in life. If a student cannot work hard now, then what are they going to do when they get a job? They will have to work hard at whatever job they want to get, even if a college degree is not needed, but the punishment for laziness or not working hard is being fired.School should help to prepare for the real world.
